The spider belongs to the family of insects. They only have two body sections and no chewing organs or wings but eight legs instead of six.
Over 40,000 different types are known, although only about 200 of these can cause health problems for people. Tarantula is the common name of the hairy representative of the bird spider family of which about 900 types have been identified. Members of this family can be as big as your fingernail or as big as your plate. They can be found in the tropics as well as in arid regions. The carry poison, although this is only used to anaesthetize their victim and people are usually not at risk.
